About Me

Hi, I’m Chandra a mom of five and a real‑life home cook shaped by the kitchens I grew up in. I learned to cook the way the older women in my family did: by watching, tasting, guessing, and never writing anything down. I was close with all my grandparents, but my Mammy, my mom’s mom, was the one I spent most of my life with.

She was from West Virginia, and being with her felt like stepping into a different world in the best way. Every summer, every spring break, every winter break, she took me back to the mountains to see family. I grew up surrounded by older relatives who cooked the way people used to cook slow, simple, from memory, from the pantry, from the garden. Those kitchens, those voices, those tables full of food… I miss all of it more than I can explain. That kind of cooking stays with you.

Mammy never measured a thing. She cooked by feel, and I learned right beside her. Later in her life, I helped take care of her, and those years only deepened the bond we already had. She has since passed, but so much of how I cook the flavors I reach for, the way I season, the way I trust my hands more than a recipe card comes straight from her.

My Grandma on my dad’s side was also a steady, loving presence, and her kitchen had its own comfort and style. Her food shows up in my cooking too different from Mammy’s, but just as real. And my Uncle Jake, who has also passed, played a part in my love for cooking as well. Certain dishes still make me think of him.

Some of the recipes on this site are theirs exactly as I remember them. Some are the dishes I grew up eating but updated with my own twists a little more brine, a different mayo, a shortcut that makes sense, or a flavor I’ve picked up over the years. And some recipes are completely my own, created while feeding my kids or trying to make something simple taste a little special.

I don’t believe everything has to be from scratch to count as “real cooking.” You’ll see jarred ingredients, pantry staples, and simple steps because that’s how real people cook on real days. My goal isn’t to be fancy it’s to share the meals that actually get made in my house: the quick lunches, the comforting dinners, the family recipes with a twist, and the dishes that taste good without making life harder.

If you’re looking for honest, doable recipes rooted in family, shaped by memory, and updated for real life … welcome to my kitchen. I’m glad you’re here.
